Tursu simply means pickles in Turkish. They are very popular in Turkey as they come in all shapes and forms. Turkish people pickle just about everything. The most popular type of Tursu is the lahana tursusu (pickled cabbage) that goes very well with kuru fasuliye.

 

30. Icli Kofte (içli köfte)

Icli Kofte is a type of starter. It’s a fried or boiled kind of meat ball that is mixed with bulgur (cracked wheat) and onions. It is very similar to “Kibbeh” in the Middle East.

31. Gozleme (Gözleme)

Gozleme is a type of “crepe” if you will, that is made of flour and water with a bit of olive oil. It’s normally cooked on large pans and you can have it either plain or stuffed. You can find it in Turkish pazars. The stuffing varies according to what you like. They can be stuffed with cheese, potatoes or spinach.

Ayran is a type of yogurt beverage that is very popular in Turkey as well as neighboring countries. It’s healthy, filling and delicious. You can have ayran with lahmacun or other types of Turkish foods.

Meze or Mezze is a selection of small starters that people eat either while they are waiting for their meal, or if they just want to have small snacks with alcoholic drinks.Turkish mezes are very popular in fish restaurants and people often have them with the Turkish national drink Raki.

This is by far my all time favorite Turkish salad. It’s so healthy and delicious! It consists of green peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, onions, walnuts and pomegranate molasses. some people like to add cheese to it as well. The first time I thought it would taste weird because of the walnuts, but what do you know! It’s delicious!

Last but not least, one of the most popular Turkish foods that you absolutely MUST try when visiting Turkey. Sucuk is a special kind of sausage that you can only find there. I can’t describe it really! You’re just going to have to try it for yourself 😀 Note: it’s amazing when fried with eggs.
